Official figures for the Dorset Council area, with Poole and Bournemouth kept separate.
These come from the ONS UK Business Counts 2026 (published through Nomis) and cover VAT and/or PAYE registered enterprises. Very small unregistered sole traders are not in the count, and ONS rounds each figure to the nearest five. The area is Dorset Council only. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is a separate council area with 15,800 enterprises of its own, and none of them are in the Dorset figure below.
- 18,000 registered enterprises, of which 16,150 (89.7%) employ fewer than ten people.
- Construction is the largest group at about 2,830 enterprises (15.7%), then wholesale, retail and motor trades at about 2,420 (13.4%).
- Professional, scientific and technical firms are third at about 2,335 (13.0%).
- Agriculture, forestry and fishing is fourth at about 1,930 (10.7%), and accommodation and food service is fifth at about 1,335 (7.4%).
Our view: farms, and the guest houses, cafes and holiday businesses behind accommodation and food, are both among the five largest groups in the council area. For those businesses we would look first at what people search when they want what you sell in your own town, rather than at the word Dorset on its own.
The "SEO Dorset" Results as We Read Them on 4 October 2026
A single desktop capture of Google UK, with nothing smoothed over.
There was no local map pack. Google put an AI Overview above the results and showed no paid ads. It gave a result count of 99, and we could read nine organic results.
One was an agency homepage, seven were agency service or location pages and one was an agency blog page. Two of the nine web addresses name Poole, one of them seopoole.co.uk, the other a page covering Poole, Bournemouth and Dorset together. Brambla did not appear. Our 29 August 2026 capture had shown the same layout: an AI Overview, with no map. Both are single captures rather than a ranking check, and results differ by location and by day.
On price: when we read the top three pages in August 2026, seoflatrate.co.uk listed £32.99 a month for a rent-a-website bundle that included hosting, updates and on-page SEO. The Bespoke Marketing Solutions page named no rate, and dorset.tech mentioned four packages with the figures on another page.

Coast, Market Towns and Poole
One of these economies empties in November. The other barely notices.
We work the DT and BH postcodes across Dorset: Dorchester and Weymouth through the middle and the coast, Portland and Swanage on the water, Bridport and Lyme Regis in the west, Sherborne, Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury inland, Wareham, Wimborne and Ferndown, and Poole in the conurbation. Two of the nine results on 4 October 2026 had Poole in the web address, so Poole firms are part of this search too. If your customers are mainly in Bournemouth, start on the SEO Bournemouth page.
