Why We Built Brambla: Honest Web Design for the Businesses Big Agencies Price Out

We built Brambla to close the gap between £50k agency retainers and DIY template tools that leave owners configuring DNS. Here is how — and why AI-accelerated development is the mechanism that makes it work.

The web-design industry has a gap, and it has been there for twenty years

If you are a large company — national brand, VC-funded scale-up, financial institution — you have options. Agency retainers of £20k, £50k, £250k a year buy you dedicated strategy, creative, development, and account management. It is expensive, but it works.

If you are a sole trader, a new business, an independent practice, an established small firm with twelve employees — your options have been: pay £5k to £15k for a freelancer-built site (if you can find a good one, if they stay in business, if they actually know SEO), or go to Wix or Squarespace or WordPress and figure it out yourself.

"Figure it out yourself" is where most small businesses get stuck.

The real story is not "we tried Wix"

Every new client we sign tells us a version of the same story. Not word-for-word, but always the same structure:

> "I tried Wix first. Or Squarespace. I cannot remember which. It was confusing. I could not even work out how to point my domain at it. I got halfway through and gave up."

This is not a dig at those platforms. They are genuinely well-engineered tools with millions of users. But they are products built to let anyone ship a website, not products built to handle the technical layers a business actually needs to run online.

Domains. DNS. MX records for email. SSL certificates. CDN configuration. Plugin security updates. Database backups. Caching. Page speed. Mobile responsiveness. Search engine structured data.

A business owner should not be learning any of this. It is not their job. Their job is running their business — the plumbing, the groundworks, the patient care, the cafe, the legal practice, the holiday let.

We built Brambla to close that gap

Brambla was founded in 2023 in Maidstone, Kent, by Sam and Harriet Butcher. We moved to Devon in late 2025 and now work from Northlew. The business started because we saw the gap up close — too many small businesses paying agency prices for template sites that did nothing for them, or paying platform subscriptions forever and still not getting found on Google.

Our proposition is direct:

  • If you do not have a website at all, we will build you one for free and charge £30 a month to host it. That is LIVE30. It exists because an established small business should not have to find £3,000 they do not have just to have a professional online presence.
  • If you tried Wix or Squarespace and hit the wall, the 7 Day Website is £1,200 — design, build, copy direction, responsive layouts, on-page SEO, domain setup, SSL, managed hosting. You do not touch any of it.
  • If you are ready to compete harder, SEO Care from £95 a month, content marketing, custom builds, full brand systems. Delivered the way bigger agencies deliver it, priced the way they do not.
  • If you are a medium or larger business that wants a retained partnership, a Custom Website from £2,500. Still well below what a traditional agency charges for comparable work.

We handle the technical so owners can run their business

This is the part that matters most. Across every one of our tiers, the client never touches DNS. Never configures an SSL. Never chases a plugin that broke because WordPress pushed an update at 3 AM. Never logs in to a hosting control panel. Never worries whether their site is backed up.

We host it. We maintain it. We monitor it. We back it up. We update it. We fix it if it breaks.

That is not a favour. That is the service. A small business owner paying £1,200 for a 7 Day Website and £65 a month for SiteCare should get a site that just works, forever, until they decide to do something different with it. So that is what we sell.

How we actually make this work economically

A thousand-pound website built by a traditional agency in 2020 would not have been profitable. The hours did not add up. Which is why, for two decades, nobody offered it — and SMBs ended up where they ended up.

In 2026, the economics have changed. Modern AI tools — not AI site builders, but AI assistants that help developers code faster — mean the work that used to take 40 hours of manual craft can be delivered in a fraction of that time. Not by skipping the craft, but by letting the craft focus where it matters — the design, the conversion path, the structure, the copy voice, the SEO — and letting the tools handle the boilerplate.

We are transparent about this, because it is the reason you pay less. Full disclosure of exactly what we use AI for, what we do not use it for, and what it means for you is on our dedicated page: How We Build.

Short version: every Brambla website is still custom-built on a modern stack (TypeScript, Next.js, Tailwind). Every decision, every design choice, every line is directed and reviewed by a human. Nothing ships unread.

But the workflow is accelerated — and the savings go to you, not to our margins.

Real founders, real accountability

Brambla is two people — Harriet and Sam. We design, we develop, we write, we talk to clients, we answer emails. There are no account managers. No junior handoffs. No outsourced contractors. The person you speak to at the enquiry stage is the person building your site, supporting it after launch, and picking up the phone when something needs attention.

This is deliberate. A small team is how we keep the price point sustainable — and how we keep quality consistent.

Who this is for

If you are running a small or medium business in Devon, Cornwall, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Somerset, Dorset, London, or anywhere else in the UK — and you are tired of the choice between unaffordable agencies and confusing DIY platforms — we built Brambla for you.

Start a project or WhatsApp us. We will be honest about what you need, honest about what it will cost, and honest about how we build it.

That is the deal.
